PRINCIPAL NEWS
I hope this message finds you well as we navigate another productive week here at Grand Avenue State School. As we continue to celebrate the dedication and hard work of our school community, I want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on a group of individuals who are truly the unsung heroes of our educational journey: our volunteers.
Volunteers are the backbone of our school. They contribute countless hours of their time, energy, and expertise to support our students, teachers, and staff in various capacities. Whether it's assisting in the classroom, organizing events, chaperoning field trips, or lending a helping hand with administrative tasks, their contributions are invaluable and deeply appreciated.
Among these dedicated volunteers, I would like to extend a special acknowledgment to our Parent and Community (P&C) executive team. This group of individuals plays a pivotal role in shaping the educational experience of our students and enhancing the overall school environment. Their tireless efforts and commitment to excellence have a far-reaching impact on our school community.
The P&C executive team works collaboratively with school administration, teachers, and parents to identify areas where support is needed most. They spearhead fundraising initiatives, coordinate enrichment programs, and provide valuable feedback on school policies and initiatives. Their leadership, passion, and vision are instrumental in fostering a positive and inclusive school culture where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
Beyond their organizational duties, the P&C executive team serves as ambassadors of goodwill within our community. They cultivate strong relationships with local businesses, community organizations, and other stakeholders to foster partnerships that benefit our school and its students.
In addition to our P&C executive team, I want to extend a special acknowledgment to all the parents who generously volunteer their time and talents to organize and support various school events throughout the year. From assisting at discos and movie nights to helping out at the recent Mother's Day stall, your enthusiasm, creativity, and unwavering support enrich the lives of our students and bring our school community closer together.
The success of events like our recent Mother's Day stall is a testament to the power of collaboration and collective action. It is heartening to see parents, teachers, and students come together to create memorable experiences and celebrate the spirit of community. Your dedication and generosity not only make these events possible but also create lasting memories that enrich the fabric of our school community.
We will celebrate our volunteers on the National Volunteers week coming up on 19 May to 23 May. If you are thinking of being a volunteer, please contact the P&C team or look out for an exciting Grand Ave Angels program occurring right here within in our school. Details of this program will be sent to families and cares shortly.
As we head into the middle of the school year, it is important to understand the importance of learning and being at school every day.
The Importance of Learning
Learning is at the heart of everything we do here at Grand Avenue State School. It goes beyond memorizing facts and figures; it’s about fostering critical thinking, creativity, and a lifelong passion for knowledge. Here are a few reasons why learning is so vital:
- Foundation for Future Success: A solid education prepares students for future academic and career opportunities. It equips them with the skills needed to navigate and succeed in a rapidly changing world.
- Personal Growth: Learning encourages personal development. It helps students discover their interests and strengths, building confidence and self-esteem.
- Critical Thinking: Engaging in diverse learning experiences enhances critical thinking skills. Students learn to analyse information, solve problems, and make informed decisions.
- Civic Engagement: Education fosters informed and engaged citizens. Students who understand history, science, and social issues are better prepared to contribute positively to society.
We are committed to providing a rich and supportive learning environment where every student can thrive. Our dedicated teachers use innovative methods and diverse resources to make learning both effective and enjoyable.
The Impact of Consistent Attendance
Regular school attendance is equally important. Each day of school provides unique opportunities for students to learn, interact, and grow. Here’s why consistent attendance matters:
- Academic Achievement: There is a strong correlation between attendance and academic performance. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to keep up with daily lessons, participate in class, and perform better on assessments.
- Social Skills: School is not just about academics. It’s also a place where students develop social skills, build friendships, and learn to work collaboratively. Regular attendance ensures they do not miss out on these crucial aspects of their development.
- Building Habits: Consistent attendance helps instil a sense of responsibility and discipline in students. These habits are essential for success in higher education and the workforce.
- School Community: Each student contributes to the school community. Regular attendance fosters a sense of belonging and helps students feel more connected to their peers and teachers.
Our School Values
At Grand Avenue, we believe in fostering an environment that upholds our core values, which are integral to creating successful learners:
- Successful Learners: We strive to provide all students with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for academic success. We encourage curiosity, perseverance, and a passion for learning.
- Take Responsibility: We teach our students the importance of personal responsibility, whether it is in completing their assignments, being punctual, or taking care of school property. Responsible behaviour is key to becoming a trustworthy and reliable individual.
- Act Safely: Safety is paramount. We emphasize the importance of acting safely, both physically and emotionally. Students are encouraged to be mindful of their actions and to create a safe environment for themselves and their peers.
- Respect Everyone: Respect is the cornerstone of our school culture. We expect students to show respect to their peers, teachers, and the broader school community. This includes respecting diverse viewpoints, cultures, and individual differences.
To support our students' success, we ask for your partnership in emphasizing the importance of coming to school every day, on time, and ready to learn. Here are some tips to help ensure your child maintains good attendance:
- Establish a Routine: Create a consistent bedtime and morning routine to ensure your child gets enough sleep and is ready for school each day.
- Communicate the Importance: Talk to your child about why attending school daily is important for their future.
- Stay Informed: Keep track of school events and important dates. Being aware of what’s happening at school can help you plan accordingly and avoid unnecessary absences.
- Reach Out: If your child is facing challenges that make attendance difficult, please reach out to our school staff. We are here to help and support you in finding solutions.
Together, we can ensure that our students receive the full benefits of their education. Let’s work hand in hand to make every school day count.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to your child’s education

Celebrating Guidance Officer Week
Last week, we took a moment to celebrate the incredible work of our Guidance Officer, Ashleigh Granzin.
Guidance Officers play an essential role in supporting the well-being of students, helping them thrive both academically and emotionally. They are trained professionals who provide a range of services, from offering individual support to students who may be experiencing challenges, to working with families and staff to create a nurturing and supportive school environment.

Ashleigh’s work is invaluable to our students at Grand Avenue State School. She supports students in building social and emotional skills, provides counselling services, assists with learning strategies, and helps navigate any personal or family difficulties that may arise.
Her dedication makes a significant impact on the success and happiness of many students across the school, and we are so grateful for the care and commitment she brings to her role.
Developing Oral Language
One of the most powerful gifts we can give our children in their early years of schooling is strong oral language skills. At Prep and Grade 1 level, oral language forms the foundation for literacy, learning, and social interaction. Before children can read or write with confidence, they need to be able to speak, listen, and understand.
At school, we foster oral language through storytelling, group discussions, role play, and shared reading. But some of the most important development happens at home — in the car, at the dinner table, or during bedtime routines. Your conversations with your child are building their vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and confidence every day.
Here are some simple but powerful tips to support your child’s oral language development:
1. Talk Together, Every Day
Use daily routines as opportunities for meaningful conversation. Ask open-ended questions like:
- “What was the best part of your day?”
- “Why do you think that happened?”
- “How did that make you feel?”
Encourage full-sentence responses, and build on what they say.
2. Read Aloud – Often and with Expression
Reading aloud exposes your child to new words, sentence structures, and ideas. Ask questions before, during, and after reading. Discuss the characters, make predictions, and retell the story in your own words.
3. Play with Language
Singing songs, playing rhyming games, or making up silly stories strengthens listening and speaking skills. Tongue twisters and riddles are also great fun!
4. Model Good Speaking and Listening
When talking to your child, speak clearly, use rich vocabulary, and maintain eye contact. When they speak, show you are listening by responding thoughtfully and asking follow-up questions.
5. Limit Screen Time and Prioritise Real Conversations
While some educational programs can support language development, they’re no substitute for interactive conversations with adults. Nothing replaces the value of talking with your child, not just to them.
6. Celebrate Effort
Be patient as your child tries new words or grammar. Encourage their attempts and gently model the correct form. Praise their storytelling, explanations, and questions — these are all signs of growing confidence and skill.
Thank you for your continued partnership in your child’s learning journey
Until next time,

Erin Strohfeldt

Helping Your Children Build Resilience
We all want our kids to feel happy, safe and confident at school. One of the best ways we can support them is by helping them become resilient. Resilience means being able to cope with life’s ups and downs, bounce back after challenges, and keep trying when things get tough.
At home, it helps to talk about the harder parts of their day, not just the good stuff. Try questions like:
- “What was tricky or difficult today?”
- “What did you do to handle it?”
- “What could you try next time?”
These questions help your kids think about how they solve problems and show them it’s okay to struggle — that’s how we grow.
Listen to Worries
Sometimes kids feel nervous about school — and that’s okay. They might be worried about friends, schoolwork or changes to their day. Let them talk. You can say:
- “That sounds hard. Want to tell me more?”
- “It’s okay to feel like that.”
- “Let’s think of something that might help.”
Letting them feel heard helps build their confidence and teaches them how to handle problems.
Remember: Kids don’t need to be perfect. They just need support, routines and someone to believe in them. We’re here to work together to help your child grow into a STAR learner.
If you’re ever unsure or concerned about how your child is going, please get in touch. We’re happy to help.

SENIOR YEARS NEWS
Welcome to Week 4 of Term 2! It's been a busy and productive start to the term, with our classrooms buzzing with energy, focus, and determination.
This term, we continue to focus on developing strong learning habits that support all students to become independent and resilient learners. Whether it's tackling challenges with a growth mindset, seeking feedback, or persevering through tricky tasks, it's been inspiring to see students showing such commitment to their learning goals.
We know that Term 2 often feels like one of the most action-packed parts of the year—with assessments, events, excursions, and co-curricular activities all underway. It's important to take a moment to acknowledge the hard work of our students, staff, and families in maintaining a positive and focussed learning environment during this busy time.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to sharing more highlights as the term progresses!
Family Holidays during Term
We understand that family time is important, and holidays can be a valuable experience. However, if your child will be away from school due to a family holiday, please note that teachers will not be able to provide schoolwork in advance or during the absence. Our priority is to support learning in the classroom, and much of the instruction and interaction cannot be replicated through worksheets or take-home materials. We appreciate your understanding and encourage students to re-engage fully with their learning upon their return.
If you would like access to general learning resources to support your child while you're away, you are welcome to access them https://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/learning-at-home. These resources are designed to help maintain learning routines without placing additional demands on classroom teachers. Thank you for your understanding and support.
SPOTTED
Our Year 5B and 5C students have been diving deep into the world of mathematics! From tackling tricky word problems to exploring multiplication and division, the classroom has been buzzing with curiosity, excitement and an eagerness to learn.

Parenting Corner: Tips & Tricks from 1-2-3 Magic and Emotional Coaching
Raising emotionally intelligent and well-behaved children doesn’t require yelling, pleading, or constant frustration. Two powerful tools—1-2-3 Magic by Dr. Thomas Phelan and Emotional Coaching from Dr. John Gottman—offer simple, effective strategies that parents can use today.
1-2-3 Magic: Discipline Without Drama
The 1-2-3 Magic method simplifies discipline into three steps:
- Give a calm warning ("That’s 1")
- Issue a second warning if the behaviour continues ("That’s 2")
- Follow through with a consequence on the third count ("That’s 3, take 5")
Tips:
- Stay calm and avoid lectures—less talk, more action.
- Use it consistently with behaviours like whining, tantrums, or not listening.
Emotional Coaching: Feelings First
Emotional Coaching helps kids understand and manage their emotions by first validating how they feel before addressing behaviour.
Tips:
- Label the emotion: “You’re feeling really frustrated right now.”
- Empathize: “It’s okay to feel upset when things don’t go your way.”
- Guide gently: “Let’s talk about what we can do instead.”
The Magic Combo
Use 1-2-3 Magic for setting boundaries and stopping negative behaviours. Then, layer in Emotional Coaching to build trust and emotional resilience. Together, they help children feel heard while also learning accountability.
Coming Soon to Grand Avenue Families!
We’re excited to announce that a Parenting Program featuring 1-2-3 Magic and Emotional Coaching tools will soon be available for families in the Grand Avenue community! This program will provide hands-on guidance, real-life practice, and supportive conversations to help you bring more calm and connection into your home.
Stay tuned for dates and registration details—your parenting toolkit is about to grow!

A Generous Gift to Our Library
This week, our school library received a wonderful surprise — a significant donation of books from one of our very own students!
We would like to sincerely thank Ashley Shin from 6B, and her family, whose thoughtful contribution has added a fantastic range of titles to our shelves. Ashley is one of our Year 6 Leaders, and we are proud to see her making such a positive contribution to our community. These books will be enjoyed by students for years to come and have already sparked excitement among our keen readers.
It’s always inspiring to see students demonstrating such generosity and community spirit. Thank you, Ashley, for helping to grow our library and share the joy of reading with others.

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY
On Thursday the 8th May our Prep and Year 1 students engaged in Outdoor Classroom Learning.
This is an opportunity for teachers to take the learning outside for a day, a session or just a lesson. AS Educators we want to make people understand that spending time outdoors is as important for children’s development as learning to read and write. We want to show how learning outside of the classroom engages and excites children in spectacular ways. We want everyone to understand that outdoor play is the key to improving children’s health, wellbeing and happiness. We want to make it clear that outdoor play is not a ‘nice to have’, it is essential for children’s development.
Why Outdoor Play and Learning?
When teachers take learning outdoors they report some powerful impacts: Children’s behaviour improves, whole classes are excited to learn, and individuals who feel inhibited by the curriculum often thrive in an outdoor environment.
When adults think back to their own happiest memories of childhood, they frequently recall the joy of playing outdoors. Play is not only central to children’s enjoyment of childhood, but teaches critical life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork and creativity.
We have attached some images of our students learning Maths (counting, size, patterns, English (phonics, labelled diagrams, writing skills, reading, sentences and word construction, drawing) and also working on their social and emotional skills, (turn taking, negotiation, working as a team).
For The Resilience Project we have been focusing on the concept of ‘Mindfulness’ for the last few weeks on Thursdays. Today some students went outside and used our senses to identify what we could see, hear, touch and smell.
The students were really engaged and enjoyed the activity

YEAR 3D NEWS
Recently in 3D, our class explored the idea of fair testing through a fun and hands-on science investigation using pull-back toy cars. We wanted to find out which surface would let the cars travel the furthest — carpet, lino, or concrete. To make sure it was a fair test, we kept everything the same except for the surface. We used the same car, pulled it back the same distance each time, and measured how far it travelled on each surface.
The students made predictions, worked in small groups to test each surface, and carefully recorded their results. We discovered that the car rolled furthest on the smooth lino and shortest on the carpet. It was a great opportunity to practise measuring distances, making careful observations, and thinking like real scientists. The class enjoyed combining science and mathematics, along with their love for learning through play.

NDIS provider school access
At Grand Avenue State School, we understand the challenges of finding therapy appointments outside of school hours and value the service that external therapists provide.
There is an established Department of Education process that we are required to follow to allow external providers to work with students on school sites.
We have recently had an increase in providers arriving at school without the steps for access having been followed. Please see the steps below provided by the Department of Education’s factsheet. The written request should be initiated by the parent.

Requests for services to be provided at school can be emailed to me on lleeg1@eq.edu.au

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AT GASS
Over the past four weeks, our students have taken part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey. This important initiative gave students the opportunity to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences related to school life. Their voices provide us with valuable insights into what is working well and where we can continue to grow. The information gathered will guide our next steps as we strive to ensure Grand Avenue remains a place where every student feels connected, supported, and inspired to learn.
At Grand Avenue, we are proud to offer a wide range of before-school and lunch-time clubs designed to spark curiosity, foster friendships, and support student wellbeing. From creative arts and coding to sports and games, there’s something for everyone! These clubs provide safe, structured, and engaging options that students can look forward to each day. Please take a look at the two attached posters for a full overview of the current clubs available.
We are also excited to share that Gardiner Chess has returned this term to offer afterschool chess sessions for interested students. These sessions help build strategic thinking, patience, and problem-solving skills in a fun and supportive environment. Further details, including how to register, are available on the flyer attached to this newsletter.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us provide a rich, engaging, and inclusive environment for all of our students.
