PRINCIPAL NEWS
As we approach the final weeks of the term, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the tremendous effort our students and staff have put into their learning this semester. Assessment pieces are now being finalised, and teachers are preparing student reports, which will be shared with families shortly. These reports provide a valuable snapshot of your child’s progress, achievement, and areas for future growth.
While assessments may be wrapping up, learning most certainly is not. At our school, we are committed to fostering a positive learning culture that values continuous growth. The final weeks of term are an important opportunity for students to review key concepts, consolidate their understanding, and strengthen skills in core areas.
We encourage all students to stay focused and engaged right through to the last day of term. This helps reinforce that learning is a journey, not just a task tied to assessment. By maintaining a strong routine and positive attitude, we set our students up for success—both now and in the future.
Attendance Matters – Every Day Counts!
A key part of this learning culture is regular school attendance. Our school attendance goal is 95%, and we’re currently sitting at 93%. This is a great effort—thank you! Let’s keep it going and aim to finish the term strong. Every day at school is a valuable opportunity for learning and connection. Even in the final days, meaningful teaching and reviewing are happening, and students benefit most when they are present.
Celebrating Student Talents through Extracurricular Activities
This term has also seen a fantastic range of extracurricular activities where students have been able to showcase their talents and build new skills outside the classroom.
Our Dance Teams have been hard at work rehearsing and are excited to be participating in a number of competitions and performance opportunities coming up. These events allow our students to shine on stage and represent our school with pride.
Our Instrumental Ensembles have also been preparing for workshops and performances that give our young musicians the chance to collaborate and perform in new settings.
Students have also participated in Chess competitions, developing strategic thinking and concentration, while our sporting teams have represented the school with great energy and enthusiasm across various events.
We’re also looking forward to our upcoming Sports Carnival, a fun and active day for all students, full of house spirit and school pride.
Principal Leave Announcement
As of 17 June, I will be taking leave for the final weeks of the term. During my absence, Ms Erin Strohfeldt will be stepping into the role of Acting Principal. I have full confidence in Ms Strohfeldt’s leadership and know she will continue to support our students, staff, and families with care and dedication.
I look forward to seeing many of you around the school over the coming days before I head off. Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in making our school a positive and successful learning environment for every child.

Helping Children Build Focus and Resilience
Did you know there’s a part of your child’s brain that plays a big role in how they handle challenges, stay motivated, and manage emotions? It’s called the anterior midcingulate cortex (aMCC)—and while the name is complex, its role is simple: it helps children push through difficulty, stay focused, and bounce back when things go wrong.
At school, we support this through routines, emotional regulation tools, and opportunities for students to reflect and try again. These strategies help build the brain’s “effort system,” which is essential for both learning and wellbeing.
You can support this at home too. Here are a few simple ways:
- Celebrate effort, not just results – Praise persistence, even when the outcome isn’t perfect.
- Talk through challenges – Help your child name their feelings and think about what they can try next.
- Model calm problem-solving – Children learn by watching how adults manage frustration.
- Create small goals – Break tasks into steps and celebrate progress
Prep Mini Beasts Incursion
On Tuesday 28th May, our Prep students became junior entomologists during an exciting visit from Hannah and Jane, expert educators from the Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre.
Armed with magnifying glasses, microscopes, and lots of curiosity, the children explored our natural environment to safely capture and study a fascinating range of mini beasts—including insects, spiders, and other tiny creatures that call our schoolyard home.
Throughout the session, students learned how to identify and describe the external features of the mini beasts they discovered. They examined legs, antennae, wings, and exoskeletons up close, gaining a deeper understanding of how these creatures live, move, and survive in their habitats.
This hands-on experience brought science to life in a fun and memorable way. It helped build our Prep students’ observation skills, vocabulary, and appreciation for the incredible biodiversity in their own backyard.
A big thank you to Hannah and Jane for delivering such an engaging and educational experience—and to our curious young learners for embracing the role of mini beast explorers with such enthusiasm!
Until next time,

SENIOR YEARS NEWS
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we move into Week 8 of Term 2, our teachers are deeply engaged in assessment and report writing. This time of term is a crucial period for both staff and students, as we evaluate the progress made across all learning areas and prepare to communicate this with families through Semester reports.
Students have been working hard to complete a range of assessments that reflect their learning and development. These assessments are thoughtfully designed to provide insight into each child’s achievements and identify areas for growth. We commend our students for their efforts and resilience during this busy period.
Our dedicated teachers are currently writing student reports, ensuring they accurately reflect academic performance, engagement, and social development. Report writing is a comprehensive process that involves careful analysis of student work and ongoing classroom observations. We are proud of the consistent commitment our staff show in providing meaningful feedback that supports student growth.
As always, we encourage open communication between home and school. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress, please don’t hesitate to contact their classroom teacher.
SPOTTED – Year 6 learners enthusiastically engaging in their English unit on creating a multimodal advertisement! Students are currently creating advertisements for a holiday destination, using persuasive language and visual techniques to capture attention and convince their audience. It’s wonderful to see their creativity and critical thinking in action as they bring their ideas to life.

Students Point of View of Inter School Sports
Rugby League: First of all, we are proud of all our students who represented our school during inter school sports with pride and sportsmanship. We thank the staff for helping get from school to school safely and organising this fun event. In our games we were full of joy that we could play freely with wonderful refs and teachers. Shout out to our junior team who won the competition and lifted up the trophy representing our school.
Soccer: In our soccer competition we had 3 junior teams and 3 senior teams that we are extremely proud of. Another huge shoutout going to our senior 2 team for taking out the championship and winning the trophy. While we played it felt amazing to be able to play an actual match with officials who kept the game fun and fair. Without the groundsmen these games would not have been possible so a big thank you to them too.
Netball: In netball we had 3 senior teams and 3 junior teams, and we played teams like Pallara, Inala, and Forest Lake State School. In the end, our junior team 1 took out the championship so big shoutout to them. Another thanks you to our staff, bus drivers and match officials who helped make this event possible. In conclusion this event was so fun and we look forward to the next one.

Introducing Karen Young – Champion for Children’s Wellbeing and Resilience
At Grand Avenue, we are always looking for ways to support the emotional wellbeing and resilience of our students—and recently, I had the pleasure of attending a presentation by the incredible Karen Young, founder of Hey Sigmund. Karen is a psychologist, author, and passionate advocate for children and adolescents. Her work offers practical, research-based strategies that empower adults to help young people navigate life’s challenges with confidence and strength.
Karen has a remarkable ability to break down complex psychological concepts into warm, accessible language that resonates deeply with both parents and educators. Her focus on building emotional intelligence and resilience aligns beautifully with our school's commitment to supporting the whole child.
Through her platform Hey Sigmund, Karen shares valuable insights into anxiety, self-regulation, connection, and emotional development. Her popular children's books—Hey Warrior, Hey Awesome, and But We’re Not Lions—use engaging storytelling and neuroscience to help children better understand their brains and feelings. These books have become essential tools for many families and educators around the world.
Karen’s words often speak straight to the hearts of children and the adults supporting them. Here are a few powerful quotes from her books:
“You’re not broken. Your brain is working exactly the way a brave brain should when it thinks there might be trouble.”
– Hey Warrior
“You were never meant to tame your strong feelings. You were meant to understand them, listen to them, and then decide what to do.”
– Hey Awesome
“Real courage is feeling scared but doing it anyway—and every time you do, your brain grows braver.”
– But We’re Not Lions
If you haven’t come across Karen’s work yet, I highly encourage you to visit www.heysigmund.com, where you’ll find a wealth of articles and resources. Whether you're a parent navigating tricky behaviours or looking for ways to strengthen your child’s resilience, Karen's work offers insight, encouragement, and hope.
We’re excited to continue drawing inspiration from Karen’s work as we support our students in becoming confident, capable, and emotionally resilient learners. If you'd like to discuss this further, feel free to make contact and organise an appointment.

Prep // Reporting Changes 2025
Dear Parents
In 2025, Queensland state schools are implementing Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum for Prep to Year 10. This updated curriculum provides a clearer and more consistent framework for teaching and learning across all subject areas. The updated curriculum is now being implemented in our Prep classes across all learning areas.
As part of this change, all students will continue to receive an academic report at the end of each semester. For Prep students, this report will include information about their effort and achievement in English, Mathematics, and Health and Physical Education (HPE).
In addition, Prep students will ‘experience’ learning in Science, HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) and Technology within their classroom programs, as well as The Arts with a specialist teacher each week. ‘Experiencing’ these subjects means students are taught and their learning is monitored, but they will not receive formal assessment or achievement grades in these areas. Instead, the report will outline the content your child has engaged with and provide an effort rating.
These changes ensure that your child’s learning journey is supported by a strong foundation in key learning areas while continuing to explore a broad and engaging curriculum.
From 2025 all Queensland students, from Prep to Year 12 will be graded on the same effort scale.
Prep – Year 2 five-point scale to report effort
A | The student is a model learner, demonstrating personal commitment, persistence and adaptability. |
B | The student consistently demonstrates personal commitment, persistence and adaptability in their learning. |
C | The student typically demonstrates commitment, persistence and adaptability in their learning |
D | The student sometimes demonstrates commitment, persistence and/or adaptability in their learning. |
E | The student requires frequent encouragement to persist and persevere with learning |
From 2025, all Queensland students from Prep – Year 2 will be graded on the same student achievement scale.
Prep – Year 2 five-point scale to report student achievement
Applying | The student is demonstrating deep and broad knowledge, understanding and skills from the achievement standard. |
Connecting | The student is demonstrating deep knowledge, understanding and skills from the achievement standard. |
Working with | The student is demonstrating the expected knowledge, understanding and skills from the achievement standard. |
Exploring | The student is demonstrating partial knowledge, understanding and skills from the achievement standard. |
Beginning | The student is beginning to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills from the achievement standard. |
These changes aim to provide clearer, more consistent, and more comprehensive information about Prep students' learning progress to parents and carers.

High school transition programs
In term 3, we will begin work with local high schools to support transitions from primary to secondary schooling for our Year 6 students. We recognize that this period of change can bring both excitement and uncertainty—especially for students with additional support needs.
A successful transition is built on communication, planning, and partnership. Transition support for students with disabilities might involve high school visits, orientation activities and meeting high school support staff. Transition activities vary by high school and by student need.
We deeply value your insights and welcome your involvement throughout this process. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to work with your catchment high school to initiate the enrolment process, which some schools require prior to participating in planned transition events. I will be in touch early in term 3 to confirm destination schools and discuss support options.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) – Focus on Emotional Regulation and Problem Solving
Over the past few weeks, our students have been engaging in targeted PBL lessons focused on key social and emotional skills. We have explored:
Using their “Toolbox of Strategies” to return to the green zone—a space where students feel calm, focused, and ready to learn. Students have been learning to name their emotions and apply strategies such as deep breathing, movement breaks, mindfulness, and talking to someone when feeling dysregulated.
Taking Responsibility by following our before and after school procedures. This helps keep our school environment safe and respectful for everyone during these key transition times.
Next week, our focus shifts to an important self-management tool: The Hi-5 Strategy.
This strategy gives students a simple and effective framework for responding to minor, everyday problems with their peers. The steps include:
- Ignore
- Walk Away
- Talk Friendly
- Talk Firmly
- Report
We encourage all families to discuss this strategy with their child at home. It's a fantastic way to reinforce healthy conflict resolution habits. Please note, we are also teaching students that the Hi-5 should not be used in situations where someone is seriously hurt or unsafe—these situations should always be reported immediately to an adult.
Lunchtime Clubs – Building Skills, Friendships & Confidence
We are thrilled with the success of our before school and lunchtime clubs, which continue to grow and thrive! These programs give students a safe and structured environment to connect, explore their interests, and build important social-emotional skills.
Here’s a snapshot of what’s happening:
Construction Club with Mrs Vicki Rolfe (Prep)
Our Prep students have been loving Construction Club! It’s a wonderful space for them to:
- Collaborate and problem-solve with their peers
- Strengthen fine motor skills through building and designing
- Develop patience and turn-taking
- Grow their confidence in group settings
- Feel a sense of success and pride in their creations

Minecraft Club with Mr Neyland (Years 3–6)
With around 100 students participating weekly, Minecraft Club is a hit! Through structured and supervised gameplay, students are:
- Practising creative and critical thinking
- Working on teamwork and communication through shared builds
- Strengthening digital literacy in a safe and guided space
- Building resilience by learning from trial and error
- Developing a sense of belonging and inclusion in a common interest group

Games Club (Years 4–6)
Games Club provides a calm and inclusive space for students to:
- Relax with colouring, board games, or quiet conversations
- Develop social connections in a low-pressure setting
- Learn empathy, patience, and good sportsmanship
- Access adult support if they’re experiencing challenges and want to talk
- Strengthen their emotional regulation through meaningful downtime

Keep an Eye Out for Our Student Councillors – They're Looking Startacular!
You may notice some bright pops of colour in the playground and around the school—our amazing Student Councillors have recently received their very own Student Leader vests, proudly featuring our PBL mascot, Startacular, on the back!
These vests symbolise more than just leadership—they represent our students’ active role in building a school where everyone feels safe, supported, and like they belong.
Our Student Councillors are out in the playground and across the school, helping to foster that sense of belonging every day. Whether they’re:
- Supporting peers who need a helping hand or friendly face
- Delivering messages and assisting staff
- Representing student voice in action
- Contributing to school events
…they are making a real difference in our school community.
We are so proud of the way these students represent Grand Avenue. Their leadership, kindness, and willingness to step up helps make our school a place where all students feel safe and known.

Thank you for your continued support in helping make Grand Avenue a safe, supportive, and engaging place for all learners. Creating the best environment for our students to thrive takes a strong partnership between school, home, and the students themselves. We’re so grateful for the role you play in this journey!

YEAR 3 NEWS
Year 3 Newsletter Update – Term 2, 2025
Reconciliation Week and Building Resilience for the Future
Dear Parents and Carers,
Term 2 has been filled with meaningful learning experiences for our Year 3 students. We’ve been exploring the themes of respect, connection, and emotional resilience in new and exciting ways. Here’s a look at our recent highlights:
Reconciliation Week 2025 – Bridging Now to Next
During Reconciliation Week 2025, our students focused on the powerful theme "Bridging Now to Next". This theme gave them the chance to reflect on how we can honour the past and build a more connected future, together. Through various activities, students learned that reconciliation is not just about understanding history, but also about creating a future where everyone feels valued and respected. Some of the key activities included:
- Learning from the Past: Students explored important moments in Australia’s reconciliation journey and discussed how these events continue to influence our society today.
- Connecting with Culture: Through stories, music, and art, our students deepened their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, learning how these traditions are vital to shaping the future.
- Creating a Collective Artwork: To symbolise the theme of bridging the past to the future, students worked together to create a mural that represents the connection between our present and future responsibilities in fostering reconciliation.
By the end of the week, the students had a strong understanding of how they can contribute to a more inclusive society, and how their actions today can help create positive change for the future.
The Resilience Project – Building Emotional Resilience
In addition to our work on reconciliation, Year 3 students have also been engaging with The Resilience Project, a program designed to help them build emotional and mental resilience. Through the core pillars of Gratitude, Empathy, and Mindfulness (GEM), students are learning practical tools to cope with challenges and develop emotional strength. Here are some of the highlights:
- Gratitude Journals: Students have been reflecting daily on what they are thankful for, learning that gratitude helps them focus on the positive aspects of their lives and builds emotional wellbeing.
- Mindfulness Practices: Through guided sessions, students are developing mindfulness techniques to manage stress, stay focused, and improve their emotional regulation.
- Empathy Activities: The class has been participating in role-playing exercises to better understand and connect with others’ feelings, fostering kindness and compassion in our classroom.
These activities are helping our students develop the skills to face challenges with resilience and empathy, while also nurturing their overall mental wellbeing.
Looking Ahead
We are so proud of the growth our students have shown this term, both in their understanding of reconciliation and in their ability to build resilience for the future. As we continue to bridge the gap between the present and what’s ahead, our focus will remain on fostering a culture of respect, kindness, and emotional strength.
We look forward to the rest of the year and all the exciting learning yet to come.

Warm regards,
The Year 3 Teaching Team
THE RESILIENCE PROJECT

The Resilience Project
Growing a Resilient Community at GASS with The Resilience Project
At Grand Avenue, resilience is more than just an individual skill—it’s a quality that shapes our entire school community. Through The Resilience Project, we are nurturing gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness as daily habits that connect us all. Our students learn practical strategies to handle challenges, build positive relationships, and develop emotional strength.
But resilience grows best in a supportive community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. That’s why we encourage not only students but also families and staff to join this shared journey. By practicing gratitude and empathy together, we create a stronger, more compassionate school environment that supports everyone through both challenges and celebrations.
To help keep these lessons alive beyond the classroom, we invite families to engage in weekly GEM Chats. These chats offer meaningful ways for families to connect and reinforce the values we’re growing here at school.
Together, we are creating a resilient community—one that cares deeply, grows steadily, and thrives together.
As part of this, we also celebrate DIS moments—where we pause to reflect on positive statements that encourage gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness.
Here are some DIS moments we celebrated recently:
